Matthew is Head of Litigation and has a vast range of expertise in litigation having obtained over 10 years’ experience in a large national practice based in the North of England. Before taking up his position with Robert G. Sinclair Matthew worked for a litigation firm in Belfast.

During his time in England Matthew dealt with all aspects of litigation ranging from standard whiplash claims through to claims that settled in excess of £1 million. He has provided advice and training to various insurance companies and dealt with numerous complex insurance disputes. During his time in England Matthew managed a large team of Solicitors.

As well as this Matthew has represented individuals that have been involved in a range of accidents and has a particular interest in the psychological injuries that are suffered and the treatment that is required. Matthew is a strong advocate for treatment such as CBT and EMDR as opposed to simply medication, and has and will continue to try and make the Northern Ireland Judiciary share this viewpoint.

Matthew leads our Litigation Team servicing clients from large corporate institutions to local businesses and individuals, ensuring that their best interests are protected no matter the size of case.

Matthew has a strong desire to get the best results for his clients and is keen to use alternative forms of dispute resolution to keep both costs and stress to a minimum.

Matthew was the solicitor that dealt with one of the largest ever Clinical Negligence cases in Northern Irelands history, it was commented at the time that the proactive approach along with modern techniques that Matthew used meant that the settlement achieved was one of the largest ever in this jurisdiction. Matthew has dealt with all types of litigation from road traffic accidents to large clinical negligence cases and always puts the client’s needs first.

Mairead has over 20 years experience in litigation. She spent 19 years with a large commercial law firm in Belfast before taking up a role in a public inquiry and then joined the expanding litigation team at Robert G Sinclair.

Mairead is recognised in the Legal 500 for her knowledge of personal injury and clinical negligence. She is described in the Legal 500 as ”very thorough, engaging, knowledgeable and astute”. She is a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (“APIL”).

Mairead has extensive experience in personal injury and she has acted for leading Insurers and retailers in defending slips, trip and falls arising out of employer and public liability claims. She is highly experienced in motor claims including car hire matters. She has given presentations to Insurers on fraudulent claims and to retailers and manufacturers on health and safety in the work place. She has also acted for local businesses in relation to breaches of the health and safety legislation where serious injury has occurred and attended PACE interviews. Mairead can offer clients a unique service of carrying out preliminary investigations and preparing reports in relation to liability and quantum. This has enabled Insurers to settle claims at an early stage, where it is appropriate to do so and Mairead is a keen negotiator and has experience in settling high court and county court claims, including complex scarring injury claims.

For 19 years Mairead acted for a leading Livestock Insurer and is familiar with all liability issues associated with the ownership of animals, in particular, horses and dogs. Her experience in this area of insurance has developed from her experience in prosecuting individuals under the dogs order on behalf of two local councils. The prosecutions have ranged from no dog licences to dog attacks on persons and sheep and seizure of prohibited breeds of dogs. She has also provided advice notes for the local authorities regarding the dogs legislation. In addition, she has undertaken prosecution work regarding breaches of health and safety where fatalities have occurred, littering offences, breaches of the Sunday trading laws, breaches of the tobacco order and breaches of the bye-laws relating to consumption of intoxicating liquor in designated areas. She has experience in other criminal matters including defending motoring offences, assault charges and theft offences.

Mairead is keen to develop her expertise in professional negligence claims and is currently acting for a bank against an expert associated with a property evaluation. She is particularly interested in medical negligence and has increased her expertise in this area over the last number of years. She has acted in high value cases where individuals experienced catastrophic life changing injuries requiring future surgery and nursing care. She has also acted for minors who were mis-diagnosed of a condition which had severe consequences not only physically and psychologically but it affected their education and career.

Outside work, Mairead is a busy Mum of twins and enjoys a good walk in the Glens of Antrim when she has time to do so!

Rosaleen graduated from The University of Ulster in 2011, with an LLB (Hons) degree in Law.

After graduating, she worked as a Legal Costing Executive for two years, providing advice and assistance to the legal profession on technical cost issues relating to both County Court and High Court actions. Rosaleen gained experience and knowledge of case law and legislation in the area of costs and assisted solicitors by drafting formal written advices, estimates of costs, negotiated legal costs and provided representation at detailed assessment hearings before the Taxing Master.

Rosaleen later joined a large Human Rights Law firm in Belfast and worked predominately within the litigation department for one year before commencing her Apprenticeship in September 2014. As a Legal Executive and Apprentice, Rosaleen specialised in actions against the state and other public bodies in relation to harassment, misfeasance within the public office, negligence, personal injury, human right violations and abuses of state power, playing an active role in several landmark cases. Rosaleen gained extensive experience in other areas such as road traffic accidents, medical negligence, employers liability and commercial contracts.

Rosaleen joined R G Sinclair & Co in November 2016 and she is a Solicitor within the Debt and Insolvency Department working closely with our Director, Mr Edmund Sinclair. Rosaleen assists in all areas of recoveries to include, asset recovery, shortfall recovery and bankruptcy on behalf of creditors. She also assists borrowers on refinancing, restructuring, secured and unsecured lending, acquisition finance, loan portfolio sales and commercial finance.  Rosaleen manages a heavy case load for clients who are individuals, sole traders, lenders and large corporations. In addition to this, Rosaleen also assists within our Litigation Department in areas of professional negligence, commercial litigation, high value personal injury litigation and banking litigation.

Outside of work Rosaleen has run charity events for Cancer Research and raised substantial sums for charity. Rosaleen has been actively involved in her local community in recent years as both chairperson and youth leader of CYC, with the aim of empowering individuals to develop and enjoy new challenges through volunteering and social action while making a positive contribution to the community.
