Figures recently released by the Comptoller and Auditor General showed that the Department of Health in Northern Ireland has paid £116m to settle legal claims for clinical and social care negligence over the last five years.
The report released last week also reveals that ongoing clinical negligence claims against the various health trusts in Northern Ireland could cost a further £136m to settle.
Of the total £116m paid to settle legal claims,£77m was paid out in compensation to individuals who were subject to care which was believed to be negligent.
The Northern Ireland Audit Office said the cost of negligence settlements places additional financial pressure on Health and Social Care services and that the true cost of these actions is not known as the cost of treatment to remedy the harm caused are not routinely measured by the trusts.
